“Fitting a putter is probably more important than getting fit for your other Golf clubs,” says Dr. Jim Suttie, The PGA of America’s Teacher of the Year in 2000 and swing coach of such world-class putters as Loren Roberts. “With a putter you don’t have the length of swing or produce the centrifugal force that you do with a wood or iron, so you don’t have the chance of compensating during the swing. If you’re not setting up to the ball correctly or using a type of putter that doesn’t fit you or your putting stroke, those problems are only going to be magnified.”
Our objective in a putter fitting is to improve your consistency and accuracy with a correctly fitted putter. TGA uses the best putter fitting systems in the world. Between Sam Putt Lab and the Mitchell Golf Putter Fitting System we will adjust your current putter or recommend a new putter suited to you. We will take your current putter and measure the length, lie, loft, and swingweight. Most putters are too long and too light to produce a repeatable and correct putting stroke. We use the Mitchell Golf Putting Station to measure these important measurements.
- Proper Lie
- Proper Loft
- Proper Length
- Proper Swingweight
- Best Head Design
- Proper Grip Size
- Proper Grip Style
- Proper Offset
Some of the problems that occur with improperly fit putters are:
- An Incorrect Lie will cause a less solid hit and adds some degree of sidespin. Additionaly if the putter toe is too high or too low, distance control becomes an issue.
- The correct amount of loft at impact lifts the ball slightly off the turf and sends it into a true roll. Too much loft at impact sends the ball hopping before rolling: too little loft sends the ball skidding. Even one degree either way can send the ball off the target line..
- Improper swingweights. The proper putter headweight promotes not only proper feel but is a major factor in distance control. When a putter is too light you lose both distance and direction control. If a putter is too heavy it seriously affects distance control..
- Improper length can be a huge factor in the mechanics of the stroke as well as inconsistency. If the putter is too long or too short you cannot get your eyes properly over the ball at address with your arms will be hanging down incorrectly..
Being fit properly for all these specs will increase your chance of making a consistent stroke. We believe Putting Instruction goes hand in hand with proper Putter Fittings. Putting is 40% of the game and you need to approach it with that mind-set.
